The quiet moments between New York songwriter Laura Stevenson’s words can fill a room, much like it did when she performed songs from her latest album The Big Freeze at the Audiotree studios in Chicago, IL. The minimal instrumentation setup––featuring Shawn Alpay on cello, Mike Campbell on bass, Sammy Niss on drums and Laura on guitar––gave way to the core strength and organic beauty of her writing on this record, making it undeniably one of the most impressive Audiotree performances to date.

Sharing the story of how she recorded her latest albumThe Big Freeze in her own childhood home, Laura discusses how the record is a humbling representation of heart, emotion, admission—and it’s incredibly vulnerable. “I was ready to start being as vague as I was and kind of start tackling stuff that I hadn’t tackled in a more substantial way,” she states, before switching to an acoustic guitar to strum out one of the up-tempo confessionals of the album, “Dermatillomania.”

Audiotree’s warm lighting and state-of-the-art studio only add to the heartwarming nature of the session as Laura discusses the inspiration behind her work. “Art, writing, anything...” is what's powerful to Stevenson and it’s just as powerful to her audience, who often find themselves identifying with even the darkest, most intense moments of her new music.

As this session proves, Laura's live performance is electric, cathartic, and inspirational, all at the same time. She just wrapped up a string of dates playing with Craig Finn (The Hold Steady), and tonight she’ll kick off her U.K/European leg of the tour in Amsterdam. All tickets are currently on sale now.
